Adam Bede (), George Eliot's first full-length novel, marked the emergence of an artist to rank with Scott and Dickens. Set in the English Midlands of farmers and village craftsmen at the turn of the eighteenth century, the book relates a story of seduction issuing in 'the inward suffering which is the worst form of Nemesis'. In Eliot met George Henry Lewes, a prolific author, philosopher, and critic; who is credited to be a great deal of support for her. Later they became lovers and lived together until the demise of Lewes. This relationship was a source of criticism for both Lewes and Eliot as they never memorialized their union legally.
